Which factors lead to a successful coaching program?

Support
Support is a critical factor impacting the success of a coaching program. Support of district and school leadership strengthens the foundations of the peer coaching program. This support legitimizes the entire program and lends crediblity to the coaching staff.

On-going Sustained Collaboration
The degree to which program can provide ongoing sustained staff development will greatly impact its success. When a coach can be involved in the planning, implementation and review of a teacher's lesson they can provide the support needed to make it a successful lesson. If they can provide that support in an ongoing way they can make a successful teacher. When staff development is ongoing and sustainable it changes the very foundations of the learning process so that it becomes an effective interaction between teacher and student that increases the ability of the student to be successful.

Willing Participants
Authentic collaboration and coaching is about relationships with people. A positive, healthy relationship occurs when both parties are engaged in the process. This is why willingness to participate is highlighted as a component of effective selection processes. The collaborative model is a long, emotionally intensive one. While it is alright for apprehension to be present, especially at the beginning, resistance to participation is a great barrier to success.

Clear Goals
Clear Goals set the direction for your program. They designate a starting point and a finish line and provide a roadmap of how you plan to get there.
